Early years and KS1 Reading
What is phonics?
In the English language, there are 44 sounds but only 26 letters. Phonics teaches children to recognise the sounds that each letter or group of letters makes, how to put them together to read words and how to break them apart to spell words.
At Brookfield Park Primary school we use the Twinkl phonics programme. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have daily phonics sessions. During these daily sessions the children :
- Learn new sounds
- Practise reading and spelling words containing these sounds
- Read de-codable books containing sounds & words they can read
- Learn to read and spell some words which are not de-codable
Key Stage 2
In Key stage 2 classes have weekly Guided Reading sessions.
