Reading in Year 1
Reading in Year 1
In Year 1 we have an engaging reading area. The children enjoy spending time in the reading area exploring and reading our fiction and non-fiction books. We also have dictionaries and atlases which have proved very popular. These books are changed regularly.
In year 1 we are learning to read words fluently and understand what we have read. We learn to read through our phonics sessions, individual reading, guided reading in groups and sharing of books with the whole class. We talk about the books we read and share our ideas and opinions including drawing on our own experiences.
Word reading and comprehension are the two important elements in reading.
We aim to develop pleasure in reading and the motivation to read and develop vocabulary and understanding as they progress through school.
