Assessment

Assessment

Staff know their pupils extremely well and this means that we can meet their needs at all times. Pupils' progress is monitored at every stage of their learning to make sure that every individual is given extra support or a higher level of challenge as appropriate. On-going assessment is used to inform teachers' planning on a daily basis and will be used to inform them about focus areas for future learning across the curriculum. Teachers use questioning, observations and learners' work, informal and formal assessments, to know where the learners are and inform them of how they can move them on in their learning.

There is a legal requirement that key assessments in the core subjects of Reading Writing, Maths and science are made and reported to the DFE at the end of KS2 (Key stage 2). Children in EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) must also be assessed against a number of different learning goals and their level of development must also be reported at the end of their reception year. It is no longer a legal requirement to publish or share end of KS1(Key Stage 1) assessment results with the DFE, however we continue to assess pupils at the end of KS1 using teacher assessments, this is so that we can continue to track pupils progress and attainment at this key point in their educational journey. All other year groups are also assessed at various points throughout and at the end of the year to enable staff to make accurate decisions about interventions and to track pupils at every stage of their learning.

Various strategies are used to make accurate assessment judgements including test materials, teacher judgements based on lesson outcomes, unit assessments and children's work. In order to quality assure our decisions we take part in moderation activities with our cluster schools for certain subjects, particularly writing. Schools are also regularly selected to receive outside moderation by the local authority for writing and EYFS standards.

There are regular opportunities for parents and carers to find out about their children's progress and to keep you fully informed about what is happening in school. The information below demonstrates the way we share information about your child's performance throughout the year, both academically and in terms of their effort and attendance.
