Science

Science Statement of Intent

Why do we teach it? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

  • To provide children with an understanding of how science impacts on our everyday lives
  • To inspire and inform children of future possibilities available to them in science both locally and nationally
  • To provide a breadth of experience appropriate to any child of that age group
  • To know what science means, how it is relevant in the world and to know about famous scientists who have influenced our daily lives
  • To provide all children with essential scientific knowledge and vocabulary that can be securely retained

National Curriculum Aims

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Science is a core subject in the National Curriculum and provides the foundations for understanding the world. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world's prosperity.  All children are taught essential aspects of knowledge plus the five types of scientific enquiry: pattern seeking, observing over time, grouping and classifying, fair testing and research.  As well as this, children are encouraged to develop skills in science such as measuring, recording and interpreting.  Where possible we try to incorporate some form of 'wow' science which develops a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.  We encourage children to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
