Computing Curriculum Overview
Children’s Definition of Computing
EYFS
““Computing is learning about how we can use technology in a safe and creative way”
KS1 & KS2
“Computing is the study of computers that include information technology (how IT is used), digital literacy (how IT is used safely and effectively) and computer science (how computers work).”
Our Computing Curriculum has been developed starting with our intent. What do our children need, here and now, to develop a secure understanding of the purpose and concepts in the Computing curriculum? Each unit of work is based on embedding knowledge and skills that will enable children to learn the next knowledge or skill in an ultimate aim of becoming computer literate.
The long term plan outlines the specific units and what areas of the curriculum intent they cover. A comprehensive 'progression in knowledge' document will be used alongside the unit of work and lessons are delivered using a variety of resources.
Intent:
- We want our pupils to be able to keep themselves and others safe in the Online world and to be confident in dealing with situations which may arise;
- We want our pupils to be able to connect with the world in a varied way and be socially responsible within the wider community;
- We want our pupils to evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems;
- We want our pupils to analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems;
- We want our pupils to see the job opportunities available to them in the world of computing.
Below is a copy of our Long Term Planning document which illustrates exactly when each unit of work will be happening. These have been planned by looking at the whole curriculum but occasionally a topic may be moved to provide children with a direct link to something that is happening in the wider world or community. Any changes will be reflected and altered on our long term plans and up to date information is available on the termly class newsletter.
As with all elements of the curriculum the skills and knowledge learned in Computing will be embedded through other subject areas. One example of this is History where children may need to complete research of secondary sources using the internet safely.
