Homework book

You can choose whether or not you are ready to try out adding and subtracting with decimals or carry on practising whole numbers.

  • Without decimals complete pages 36 and 37
  • For decimals complete pages 56 and 57

Or remember you could start with whole numbers then try the decimals- Move your own learning on as you feel the need. Remember to keep checking your answers with a calculator use the answer pages in the back of your book, this will help you to decide whether you need to move on or not.

Try to solve the problem below- Remember the key to problem solving is:

  • Find and underline or write out the key information
  • Decide if you have the whole one already or if you are trying to find the whole one
  • Be clear about which steps you need to take and in which order
  • Decide on the best strategy for any calculations involved
  • Organise your working out so that it is clear and logical
  • Remember to check that you’ve answered the actual question
  • Use the strategy that works best for you- here are some suggestions:
  1. Draw a table to organise information
  2. Draw a diagram or pictures
  3. Work backwards
  4. Use equipment to represent parts of the problem
  5. Use colours to code your working out

Monday 12th October

This week we’re moving on to multiplication using the written method. We will start with the Mini Maths. I suggest watching the video examples first before attempting the questions then have a go at the other tasks (see below)

If anyone completes these in super quick time then have a go at these tasks on the Transum website.

You could start with level 5 then move onto level 6- you could work out the answers first using a written strategy then check them on the webpage. If you wanted to start with more basic multiplication then you could always start at a lower level and work your way up as high as you can go.

Below is a document with three different sets of word problems using multiplication strategies

Have a go at one of the sheets.

1 star will help you practise multiplying 3 by 2 digits

2 stars includes some 4 digit numbers and decimals

3 stars includes very large numbers and some multi-step problems

As always start where you feel comfortable and move on if it’s too easy. Try to complete 10 questions in total- you can move between sheets to challenge yourselves. The answers are on a separate document below to check when you’ve finished. Remember to find your errors and try and work our where you might have gone wrong.

There are answers on the next page so if you’re struggling have a look at the answers and work out how you could have got those answers. They are tricky but just have a go and try your best.
